Hello again all...Ordered a replacement vacuum canister (for 68 to 82 vette)..Bout the size and looks of a coffee can...Seller says it will allow lights to go up and down WITHOUT engine running..Also will correct rough idle..(which I have both issues)...I understand this may not be a "fix all" but I said for $60 it sure would'nt hurt...Problem is where is it?. .Thanks,Pete
Unless they changed after '74, the vacuum storage was in the horizontal tube that was also the backup to the bumper. I believe what you may have is the charcoal canister. At least that's the only coffee can size tank on my '73.
Where is it? as in it hasnt been shipped ???
If you mean where is it located on your car...what year "is" your car?The coffee can style canister came only on the 80-82 cars and it was mounted up front between the headlights. If you have a vette thats not an 80-82 you can still use the can but you will need to mount it.

'80-'82 had a vacuum storage canister mounted between the headlights. But there's no canister on my '76 & I don't see one in my AIM anywhere...
My '69 has the cannister in the drivers fender just left of the master cylinder. It's much larger than you think, especially when you try to remove it without taking out the rest of the car.
But like most of the others have said, you need to run down your vacuum issues before you put in a new cannister. First off, plug up every vacuum source on your carb and manifold, even the power brakes. Then run it and see if the idle is better and if the mixture setting will 'stick'. If so, then you know you have an issue someplace else within the vacuum system. It's a daunting task to delve into, but once you get your head around it, it make pretty good sense and gets much easier to diagnose.

And its much, much, much easier than rebuilding a Q-jet!!!
Lots of guys on the forum are comfortable and have been successful rebuilding their Q-jets "WITH" the help of Lars papers.
Maybe if Lars would right a Vette headlight&wiper vacuum paper the fear of the vacuum system could be tamed. And with that paper Lars could establish some diagnosing "standards" that would make it easier for the rest of us to assist guys with their vacuum issues.
Example of a Lars "standard"...Total timing=initial+mechanical...This "standard" (a good thing)makes it much easier to assist others.
Does anyone else agree with me?
Sorry Lars if this is just another load on your back...but you really are "the man" that most listen to!!!
Thanks for all the replies...After further research I did find a tube that is plugged in between the headlights...It may go there as mentioned above..Also, I have a headlight/windshield wiper vacuum tube kit that has a good diagram of vacuum runs..BUT, I agree that LARS could really help on this issue!I'll keep digging. ..Pete
