Default ignition key probs - need part # ?

1976 coupe

My son gives me a call last night at 9PM and says when I turn the key - there is no resistance and the car wont start. I walked him through a couple of obvious things and then determined I had to grab some tools and go bail him out.

We ended up dropping the column and removing the ignition switch(electrical part on top of the column) and starting it with a screwdriver.

My guess is that the plastic gear is trashed? The rod did not move at all.

I looked for a breakdown of that assembly and did not find a good picture.

Completing my fun evening - We were half way home - I was following about 1/4 mi behind him in my truck and I see a police car do a quick U turn and take off after him. Someone saw us in the Walmart parking lot and reported it as a stolen car. By the time we were finished there were 3 police cars and 5 police officers on scene. Must have been a slow night.

My parts manual goes thru '75, but I think the '76 is the same. The sector wheel part numbers are: 7805158 with tilt/tel and 7812526 without tilt/tele. Believe it or not, my local Chevy dealer had it in stock. In my '75 parts manual, the price is $.53, now, it costs 13.00! That's inflation! Good luck

Most C3s by 1975 had T&T columns. I have very complete instructions on disassembly & repair of the C3 steering columns. T&T as well as the standard non-adjustable variety.
Go to: www.corvettefaq.com
Click on: Jim Shea's Steering Articles
Click on: Corvette Steering Papers
Scroll down to the T&T or the Standard Steering Column section.

You will not have to drop the steering column in order to change the plastic sector gear (although it is generally a lot easier to work on the column if it is out of the car.)

Thank you guys for responding. It is tilt/tele . I had him go through all the tilt it up/down see if it works routine - no dice.

I will take it apart next time he is home.

Its probably the Pawl ( that pot metal rack) that actuates the rod to the switch.

good call - it is the pot metal rack that is broken. This is a 76 with the tilt/tele. should I also change the plastic gear while I am in there?

the plastic cover for the C-Clip is very brittle - is there any reason to replace it? if so what is it called/part number?

The part that you want is;
GM part #7808385 Retainer
or Zip Products #SC-517 Cancelling Cam Plastic Retainer

Does anything ever go wrong with the rod?

Basically the rack comes in a rebuild kit complete with the plastic sector, steering shaft upper bearings, and springs. You can purchase it at the Zip Store.

http://www.zip-products.com/Corvette...D798C3277E9E91

Instructions for disassembly and repair of your T&T steering column are printed above.

Since the rack is held in place by one of the pivot pins, I would suggest removing the column from the car. You will need all three papers and the three pics that are listed on the Corvettefaq.com websight.

Thanks for all the help - I ordered the kit and replaced the parts today. With the exception of having to backtrack 3 times (forgot parts)
It went very well.

Default 1971 ignition switch

My ignition switch wouldn't work. Took the steering column apart and it turns out if need a new Ignition lock switch assembly and keys--locksmith won't touch it--said buy a new one. I also need a new igntion key warning switch. Anyone know where I can purchase these? Didn't see them listed in any of the catalogs.

That is not the key warning buzzer switch that you want. The 1969 through 1976 switch is very rare.

Go to www.corvettesteering.com
click on Corvette Parts on the upper left
scroll down past the power steering gear
the ninth part down is the switch that you want (listed as very rare) and quite expensive.

Doc Rebuild has it listed as:
Ignition key warning buzzer switch 69-76 Buzzer Switch NOS 2187411

I will leave it up to you to determine which supplier is lower cost.

I do not believe that Zip carries this part.
