Default poly. body mount?

Will poly mounts (energy suspension) compress like the rubber mounts?
If so, how much?

Thanks

Default Body Mounts

If I recall correctly, most posts I read are in favor of the 1973 and newer rubber mounts. I think the feeling is that they isolate, to some degree, shock and vibration. If these are used on an older frame, I believe they raise body height approx. 1/2".

I used the rubber mounts from a 73 and up on my 72. I cut 1/2 inch from them prior to install. Worked great.

As much as I've hated having rubber compromise my suspension (most of it is gone now), I haven't been sold on the idea of replacing it with poly on the body mounts yet. So what's the benefit supposed to be, again?

Less decay. By 1991, my 77's rubber bushings looked like hell. By the time I replaced them this year, they were crumbled and compressed into nothingness.

68-72 used aluminum spacers instead of rubber bushings. There's no way that poly is going to be harsher than solid aluminum, and I've never noticed any annoying body vibrations or road harshness with pre-72 cars. It's a Corvette, not a Cadillac. Some feedback is desirable.

On Body mounts the only real benefit I can see is stability. I really doubt there is enough vibration damping at that point to be noticeable, but as rubber ages it will sag causing body misalignment problems, cracked windshields etc.. Polys are supposed to last virtually forever, thats why I put them on

With poly mounts the birdcage acts more like a structure that reinforces the frame. The less wear factor is a plus with that.

I use to have poly body mounts. All I really notice was an increase in road noise and rattles. Last year I finally got fed up with them, and replaced them with the stock rubber ones. No regrets going back to rubber.

I just ordered poly mounts for mine Friday. Rubber is totally compressed on my 78. Reading this I hope I dont regret it. I hope it makes it tighter!!
Squeaks I can deal with. Stereo and exhaust...

But aren't you supposed to use a special grease on them to kill the squeaks? Summit sold me some with the mounts...........

I agree completely that poly will add road noise to the inside of your ride. And if you don’t have the rattles now they will show up. The reason why rubber is used in connections between the body and suspension parts is to absorb shock thus deadening the noise. With rubber mounts you have also created an insulator between the frame and the body. I like the ride of my 77 with original rubber body mounts and people do complement the ride and sometimes compare it to a Cadillac with a good suspension system under it and, I don’t mind a bit.
I know I will be misunderstood, but I will stress the point again. The fiberglass is 30+ years of age and it is less forgiving then it was years gone by.

There's no movement there, so there shouldn't be any friction to cause squeaking. With the suspension bushings, you get metal/poly rotation.

If that was a problem, we'd be hearing about 68-72 models cracking apart with their aluminum spacers.

Guys,Guys,Guys......

The question is (Will poly mounts (energy suspension) compress like the rubber mounts?) ??

I just want to know if they shrink down from the weight of the body on them, not if the ride is softer or they last longer.

Oh ... the poly bushings do not compress at all. When I took them out years later, they still looked brand new. If your replacing the aluminum bushings, they will be a decent upgrade.

To the rattles and noise I mentioned earlier, it wasn't the bushings themselves. I picked up rattles and squeeks between the interior peices and the body. The poly makes a more rigid connection between the frame and body (vs. rubber), which tends to flex the body a little more.
