Tried to start my new ZZ454 for the first time yesterday. It's a 73. Basically, no spark! I have a Mallory Unilte Breakerless distributor that I Have been using for about 8 years. It sputtered a couple of times on the first couple of cranks, then absolutely nothing. The coil is putting out spark, and it is wired properly, but I am not getting spark to the plugs. (It IS getting fuel) It is probably the ignition module, but how can I check for sure? How easy is it to fry one of those things? IF that's what it is, would it be worth it to install one of their power filters in line when I replace the module? And if it is the module, any special precautions that I should take when replacing it, so that I don't fry another one?
Thanks! Any input will be appreciated before I start replacing expensive ignition parts!
If, in fact it is the distributor, all it takes to blow a Unilite is a voltage spike...that's why Mallory sells a filter to protect it from that.
If your distributor is economically repairable, get the filter (personally, I think Mallory should either build in ito the distributor or include it with them since they know of the problem). If you replace the distributor, get a non-Unilite to avoid the problem completely.
This is why I don't run one anymore,My car ran good for 5yrs. and one day nothing,it was my Mallory Hyfire, replaced ran agian then rained and a drop fell on the box ,fried,.
Then the module went on it and my brothers car too.
Moved to MSD and no problems yet.
Pertronix makes an electronic conversion for the Mallory Unilite distributor. I have had 2 Unilites fail in 2 different vehicles. I always carried a spare module on road trips just in case.
