Got a 77 and the guy before me installed a new turn signal / dimmer switch. It worked fine up until tonight when I went to go to brights and total darkness, both lights. Click back to low beam and everything is fine. Is that something in the switch or a fuse that has gone bad?
is the bright light indicator in the dash on, when you go to brights.
if it is then it may be a connector, C115, if it isnt on then its probably the dimmer switch. both headlights use same circuit breaker. of course the circuit breaker in the headlight switch may be tripping but i wouldnt think it would reset that fast when you go back to dims.
I haven't checked the headlighs themselves because I've never had 2 go out at the same time but it's certainly worth making that a part of the elimination process. thanks.
How much trouble is it to repair the dimmer / turn signal switch?
The dimmer switch is at the left side base of the column. A three wire connector. Should be Lt. Green, Yellow, and Tan. The switch is operated by a rod that pushes down on the switch. The switch is attached to the column with two screws. The switch could be bad un likely or just or out of adjustment. It is adjusted by loosening the two screws. These high beam switches were pretty common on GM cars and trucks. So finding one if it is bad should not be a problem.
Great info. Went out after reading and found that the problem was the rod. Apparently it was out of adjustment and wasn't making a good connection. Adjusted just a little and shazam.....bright lights. thanks
Wanting to bring this back to the top to see if my problem might be related.
I am having the opposite problem. Only my bright lights come on, not my dim lights. Could my issue be the rod adjustment as well?
Also I just bought this, Im assuming the first detent when pulling the light switch is dim, because the one after that is bright (full out). When I go to dim/first detent I get my gauge lights as well as my tail lights, just not the headlights, ill go check the fuses as well.

When puling out the headlight switch, the first detent is tail lights, park lights and dash lights. Pull it out all the way for headlights. The signal lever should be used to dim the headlights. The actual dimmer switch is on the lower left side of the column. I believe there are slotted holes. Loosen the screws and slide the switch up or down the column for adjustment. I think 77 has it on the column, my 75 has the dimmer on the floor.
