Default Quick Vacuum Question - Maybe stupid, maybe not

im just wondering whether or not i can use heater hose in place of some vacuum lines, such as the booster to intake manifold hose, or does it have to be vaccuum lines

Believe it or not vacuum hose is made for vacuum. Other hoses are made for temp and pressure. Even fuel line will collapse under vacuum conditions. You need Vacuum Hose. Cheers

you can buy it by the foot at your local parts house. We have had several threads on here and I think the concensus has been to buy the kits, because there are so many varying sizes. i.e., headlight vacuum setup, heater vacuum setup. Something like the brake booster you should be able to get from the parts house. Most of the time its a direct replacement over in the "help" section hanging on the wall.

ACE,
Another reason that the correct sized hose is important is the size has to do with the volume and thus ensures that the various actuators, relays and valves get the vacuum in the proper amount and sequence. I understand that the person who designed the system was assassinated by the Chevrolet dealers in the early 70's.
Regards,
Alan

Hey, what's wrong with using heater hose and duct tape? Bubba does it all the time.

I just completed a total replacement of all vacuum lines and it was definitely worth buying the the right hoses from a reputable supply house. Everything fit perfect!

The ratio between the inner diameter and thickness is 1:1 or more on all vacuum hoses.

Most of the kits I have seen are also color coded which makes installation much easier

Default Hose

In some cases it might work but that brake booster hose is a special type of vac hose. It's fairly expensive compared to other hoses. I got a length of it at NAPA many years ago and remeber it was close to #3.00 a foot. I'm sure it's more now.
No matter what it costs, brake parts are something I would never go cheap on. Just my opinion.

If you can't find large vacuum hose you can use power steering return hose. It is also stiff and won't collapse.
