Reason: fixed problem
I have a 79 that does the same thing. It has been going on now for a number of years. It is not too loud, just enough to be bothersome. It doesn't happen all the time but sporadically. I have tried to locate the source and have had a mechanic try to find it. We have both failed. I have had all the exhaust system checked, the rear end was rebuilt last year, the fuel tank was dropped to search around the tank area, and the spare tire and compartment seem to be secure. Any ideas would be appreciated.
turn your radio up but seriously i have had strange noises on varrious cars over the years. It can drive you nuts trying to locate a strange squeek, or rattle. Usually its somthing like a creeky suspension, or some bushing in need of oil, or an exhaust hanger. Point is usually its nothing to worry about, just annoying and frustrateing .
There are 2 metal lines that run up from the passenger side of the car over the top of the tank to the mouth of the gas tank. They fit into rubber hoses as they connect to the tank. They may have some play in them and be rattling on the tank. I had to replace the rubber hoses on my 78 this summer and have noticed the same sound you describe. My first thought was those two metal fuel lines.
exhaust replaced by me cat back and is tight, thanks
weld the seams on your exhaust, clamps hold parts together but dont always seal when system gets hot,as pipes expand leaks can develop and mysteriously disappear as system cools.I have been a truck mechanic and fabricator for 35 years and have seen this problem over and over again.
Does the tapping increase with engine RPM or with road speed?
If engine RPM, it could be "fuel line hammer" (pulses from the fuel
pump could be causing the fuel line to oscillate/move and if the line
is close to something, like the fuel tank, it'll make a tapping noise).
My '68 does it now and then (usually during cold ambient temps)
but the '81 doesn't....
