Default cylinderhead question

I would like to take my aluminum head off my engine to check some things out. Since it is the first time i will do this with my aluminum heads my question is if the head gaskets steel compression ring, will leave an impression in the softer aluminum and thus require milling the head... thanks

For my experience (I disassembled several time my engine) you have only to change gasket!

Of course if you have chosen head gasket with pre-flattened rings!

A small trick..... paint your new gasket with 2-3 very thin layers (but uniform) of high temp. paint....... like the one for headers!

I was using this trick when I was racing in Italian GT with a C5..... and the heads where off any two weeks!

For aluminum heads they make felpro soft copper ring head gaskets which will not brinell (indent ) the aluminum heads

I bought through summit and they only had a couple of gaskets for a 400 block, i my case i used a Fel pro 1014 which has flattened rings with minimum brinelling of the heads (whatever that would mean)

I have always used the 1010 Fel Pro gaskets wit ha copper ring. This is what AFR recomended for my heads. I have had them off a few times with no brinelling at all. Not sure about the 1014s.

Ok, but the 1010 doesn't have steam holes in it, my 400 requires them.

Ok, if found the instructioncard of my heads again and it states that with a 400 I should use the 1014. So from this perspective it should be right. However I still wonder if it would brinell, even slightly.
