Default 72 Resto Questions (interior, grills)

I have a 72 BBC, frame off near complete. The thing is, I bought this car as a basket case.

It is Mille-Miglia red with deluxe black interior.

My questions are...what color do the grills go? I bought used ones and one is black and one is gray. The center one came with the car but it had been repainted a darker gray and none of the chrome is showing.

My next question is about the deluxe interior. Basically all of my interior is shot. It was out of the car when I got it. I will need almost every piece. What all was different on the deluxe interior? Can I put regular interior in it? I hate the woodgrain stuff that is on the door panels so if I could get rid of this stuff that would be great. I do want to group it all together like it was originally, just without the deluxe.

My trim tag was taken off for painting and the previous owner couldn't find it so no idea what the codes are.

It was number 10,7xx in line so would that make it finished in Jan-Feb of 72?

Thanks

The delux interior was the same as the standard with the wood stuff carpet etc. just tacked on. So standard interior will work fine.

I believe the Delux Interior had cut pile carpet, leather seating, carpet on the lower door panels, and woodgrain on the center console and on the door panels. For my 72, I'm gonna use cut pile, leather, but standard door panels and standard center console (black). I dont like the woodgrain eitrher!

When you say the interior is shot is it just worn and dirty maybe faded or is it ripped and trashed? If it is not ripped and trashed you can sand and re-dye all the interior and make it look like new again. The front grills should be painted a metallic grey and outlined in chrome. Center grill is all painted grey. Deluxe interior was all the wood grained stuff (center console and the door inserts) and then the carpet on the bottom of the door with the chrome trim piece. My 72 is 11721 and has a birthdate of January 16 or 18 so I would bet yours is a december 71 car. There's some calculaters online you can approxiamate the build date with. The codes that were on the trim tag will can also be found in the Black Book as well as many other publications. Good luck with the rest of your resto...

Sully,

Thanks for the info.

The pieces of interior that were not thrown away are cracked and pretty rough. I think the lower dash panels can be skinned. The seats are torn and most of the parts look like they have been wet.

I think I may put the deluxe interior in with the exception of the wood around the gear shifter. I can deal with the wood on the door panels. This car is pretty original so I would really like to keep it that way...I don't want to be the one to mess it up.

The block has a cast date of L13 71. I guess this is December 13, 1971? That means the car was probably built within a couple weeks of this I guess?

Hey,

mine came with the deluxe int and I did exactly what you are talkinng about. I reconditioned the doors and hardware but I left the woodgrain off the shifter console. Check back through my old posts and you can see where I was showing my interior refurbish job. The dash can be reskinned... it's all molding. The door panels you can get at a number of retailers. All the rest of the interior parts get a bit pricey especially the rear quater panels and rear window trim... jeeze you'd think they were made of gold. But start watching Ebay or check out corvettejunk.com as those parts come up for sale a lot. Then you can sand and dye them easily. Seats and carpet are pretty easy to place new in and recover but you should think about placing down some insulation/ sound deadener ... if you need info PM me and I can help with that too. If there is a concern with innterior leaks you should start in on replacing the t-top weather stripping, rear window seal, and the deck vent drain tubes...those vent tubes suck for sure and leak into the rear cargo area when bad! Yeah with the numbers you have from the block and the vin number I would think either december 71 or very early Jan 72. Let me know if you need anything at all. Lookinng forward to having another chrome bumper stingray on the road!

You can do all of the deluxe stuff (door trim, cut pile carpet instead of loop, leather, stainless trim on the pedals) without using the wood grain inserts. If you get the 1977 deluxe door panels, they're the same except they left the wood grain off and just had the black/chrome trim over the spot where the comfort weave is on the standard panels. I believe it had black inserts instead of the wood.

For the center console, you can just leave off the woodgrain piece to get the standard look.

The grills did have quite a dark gray paint on them with just the chromed edge of the egg crate exposed. There is also a chromed edge around the parking light lens that is exposed. The center grill is the same gray with no chrome exposed. Try to get a look at an original grill to see just how much chrome shows and where.
Regards,
Alan

Look at the trim tag on the drivers door jam. That will give you the build date as well as the interior trim and color as well as the exterior color. The build date should be about 2-4weeks after the casting dat of the block but it could be more.

Sully,

I looked back at your resto pics..nice job. I read that about the sound proof/heat proof stuff and with a big block I think that stuff is a must. I will probably buy mostly new stuff and work on some of the original equipment that I have...thanks.

Alan and Okinawa...thanks for the help. One of the grills that I have has never been painted but is a different color than the center grill. I can tell where the chrome should be though.

Red70vette...my trim tag is missing. However I do know now that my car was produced in very early 1972.
