Default High Torque Starter "R" wire help

I recently put a GM High Torque starter in my 70. I have done a search and found one thread that mentions leaving the "R" terminal wire off since I only have two posts on the new starter. One for the battery cable and other for the starter post. I have a Unilite distributor on the car. My question is will my car still start normal with this wire left off the starter? I know it supplies 12V to the coil for starting. Thanks for your help.

I think the mallory unilite and old points style distributors need the r wire attached, but you need to attach a diode first. Lemme see if i can find the link, im in the same boat now with my 71.

The GM starter should be similar in install as the MSD. Check this out. It might help.

I am going to need some help with this one. I am one of those guys who needs a picture to see what I am supposed to wire up. I don't even know what a diode is. Thanks.
