Default such thing as performance alternator?

I was reading some topics last week on the the forum debating whether any horsepower was gained by replacing belt driven components with electrical components. The debate being that the power gained from dropping a belt was lost from the extra pull it took for the alternator to put out that extra current for the new components.

That got me to thinking, is there such thing as an alternator that maybe has less internal friction or uses more efficient components so that it takes less power from the engine to put out the same amps compared to a typical factory alternator?

I need a higher amp alternator for some added electrical components anyway so if there is such thing I would like to look into that.

an easy upgrade is to simply get a cs144 alt from something such as a 1993-1996 impala SS which will push your amp output up over 100. ANy aftermarket store such as Autozone or Oreilly's will have one or you can start the search in a slavage yard and maybe get lucky ast finding one for real cheap... good luck.

"such thing as performance alternator?"

In a word, no.

High output yes, but that's not what you asked.

I agree, using a newer CS style alt is the way to go. The CS130 and CS144 are both easy to get and easy to install. Here is a paper on installing the CS130, so it can be applied to installing a CS144. The only difference is the CS144 has a larger case.

If you want performance {HP} just disconnect the alt plug during a pass or run. Then just hook it back up

There are racing alternators that put out just enough power to run the ignition system. They are usually smaller and lighter. I don't think they would be a good choice for a street vehicle.
