OK.....since I play with the interior alot....the door gets a workout. I have to slam my door from around 10 inches or more for it to close and latch. Everything is aligned correctly according to shop body book. Is this normal for 80-82?? I think the gasket is the culpret.
Anyone have a trick to solve this....what would be nice is to have a "draw down" latch system.....no slamming....
PS...I don't want to push on the door....micro dust and dirt will certainly scratch the paint.

Is it the same guy with the microscratches when he shuts his hood? I don't drive mine because you can get microscratches on the steering wheel if you don't get all the microdust off your hands. Hey but when I'm sitting in it in my driveway, I still do the micro wave.

My passenger door closes fine, but my driver's is all wacky. Drove me nuts till I looked at my #4 body mount.... well, more like lack there of. Driver's side was just not there. Not rusted or anything, someone obviously took it out for some unknown reason. I put a new one in, and it lined things up much better and allowed me to tweak the hinges a little and get it to close right.
Does it do it with the windows down, as well? If it only does it when they're up, pop off your door panel and do a little window adjusting.
If that bearing has any play,it can cause the door to stick/hard to close,etc...I went nuts trying adjusting, etc until I found some play in that rotating bearing on the bolt....I got another one off a donor vette...and now the door closes if I sneeze on it.....

I would never have guessed that striker bolt could make that much difference. Makes me want to check mine. New weatherstripping must be making some difference though (on mine).

Here is my 69 door (bearing has some play on the striker). In the first vid I tried closing it like the 78...it did not latch tight...in the 2nd vid,I pushed it just a little harder...
New weather stripping can be a factor, but not for long.Ideal is the striker bolt bearing has no play at all...

Ok, silly question......what is the bearing? The moveable 'ring' that is inset within the striker bolt? Basically, where the door latch hits? Both of mine move what I would consider pretty freely.

Yes,the contact area on the striker bolt...if the rotating part (bearing/bushing) moves easily side to side when you push on it, (loose on striker) your door will not close easy because there will be to much slop/movement affecting the latch...there is no way to adjust for that movement..

What about the bearing wears that causes that problem?

I think all that happens here is the bushing inside the metal roller sleeve(bearing) wears out...the 78 lasted 27 years on the drivers side...and it wore out before the passenger side did...
Good idea to lube them with lithium white grease...
