After pouring over dozens of transmission/torque converter sites I ordered a 3000 stall 9.5" VIGILANTE lockup converter to sit behind the 396SB I'm building. Not cheap but well built, 2year warranty and 1 free restall in the first 2 years. I'll probably be the only one in my neighborhood with a pink torque converter.

What has been your experience on the street with the 3000 converter?
I am installing a 406 in my 77 with a 3.08 differential. I was considering a Hughes 3000 stall but most of the converter companies are recommending a 2500 stall when I speak with them.
My car will be almost exclusively street driven with only occassional trips to the track just for fun. I know that that the 3000 stall will provide a great launch but how will it handle driving around town?

I'm happy with mine so far; (a little different and no lockup feature though)
seems to be good vendor . . .
You'll like it. I have the same thing in a 3400 stall. Mine has held up good so far. You're right they are pink.
I drive mine on the street and can barely tell the difference between this and a stock converter. I have never tried a cheaper converter but I'm told that there is a big difference on the street manners and drivability of the cheaper ones. These are $1200 + converters

$699 I'm sure I could have found something less expensive that would have worked well, but you know how it is sometimes. I've always wanted one, now I can afford it. All the msg boards say they are the baddest street/strip converter available. I'll see!

I have an ART CARR 9.5" 3000 stall lock up behind a 383 w/a 242/248@.050 hydraulic roller, 3.73 gears in my other toy. I was wary of the high stall but it has proven to be VERY streetable. Not very loose at all and I can pull both front wheels flashing from a 1200rpm launch in a 3770lb truck.

The 3000 stall will definitely give better strip performance, but compared to a 2500 unit, you will notice the slippage around town; this is the reason the companies are recommending the 2500, especially since you mentioned the car will be almost exclusively street driven. (They don't want you calling them back as an unhappy customer). The higher priced converters (Vigilante, Art Carr, etc...) make their 3000 converters more efficient, with street manners closer to the tighter typical 2500 types. But even these will seem "loose" if you are used to a stock converter. BTW, a trans cooler should be considered a must for a 3K.
That being said, I have an Art Carr 2900 stall (custom) and I love it!! (Strip performance won out in my case, and the car only gets driven around 500 miles a year....and it's not that bad driving around town.)

Is it just a single lockup clutch? You will have to be very careful to never have it lockup with the go petal down. Once it is locked then you can floor it.
My 3500 stall for my 383 became @3800 stall behind my 427. traction really becomes the problem. Your 396 aught to be a real tire smoker

Its a single clutch. I only race eighth mile so it won't have time to lock up. I'm still in 3rd at the finish line. I don't do any high speed open road stuff. I get nervous at anything over 90 on the hwy:bb

I also don't drive much over 90 on your sand/shell covered roads out in the sticks down by Sebring. I was in Forida in June and did some off the paved road "Road Rally" racing in a AWD rental car. Just enough rain on the sand to get some bite
you guys all have some nice looking and strong running C3's
I may upgrade to a 3500 stall after my suspension mods if I cant break into the 11's trying to get a better short time.... 1.6 or 1.7 should get me a 11.9 1/4 time
