Is there something I can use to manually turn the crank to get number one to TDC?

You can turn the bolt on the front of the crankshaft that holds the harmonic balancer on. 3/4 socket I believe. It helps to take out some or all spark plugs.

Thanks. When I drop the distrubutor in I can tell the gears are matched but there is a 1/2 inch gap between the base of the distributor and the intake. What am I doing wrong?

What about if you've removed the harmonic balancer and don't have that bolt anymore

It's probably not mating with the oil pump shaft. Make sure they line up using a flashlight and a long flathead screw driver.

That worked, thanks. Do I start with #1 plug wire where the rotor is pointed?

Default try this

if the car is a 4 speed , put it in 4th. gear and you can push thre and that will slowly turn the motor. Remove the plugs and it turns even easier.

But 4th is easier than 1st. Same for push starting if battery is dead.

Use 4th. not 1st.

If automatic , forget everything I said
