Guys who makes the best aftermarket rag joint replacement for our cars? I purchased a help kit from the local store and I dont like the way it went together. I did reuse the shoulder bolts that I have read about in earlier posts. I called GM and they told me they no longer sell the joint. I have a 77 tilt/tele column. Thanks

Guys I got it figured out with a earlier post pic from chuck D I was trying to put it together wrong. The help rag worked good. Here are a few pic's
Looks good, be aware that GM infused a wire mesh into the Origial
flexable peices, for the horn ground. If your horn doesn't work on installation, that would be the cause.
If you look at the stop pins on your original flex coupling you will note that the pins were the same diameter. One of the pins on your rebuilt flex coupling is much larger in diameter than original. You might get some clicking from the pin hitting the window edges of the steering column flange.
Because of the nut that holds the big stop pin in place, it looks like you are going to have a heck of a time getting a socket on the pinch bolt that attaches the flex coupling flange to the gear shaft.

RunningMan373 There is a wire mesh laid into the coupler if you look at my top pic that shows the side view you can see it. Jim I reclocked the bolt a little bit and I positioned a thin wall 12 point socket on the bolt and it worked fine. Thanks guys for the info.

That's the one annoying thing about the rebuild kit. I've always had to take that nut off to install or remove the coupler.
Does anyone know if you can use a u-joint to replace the rag joint?
Yes you can. There are aftermarket joints/couplers available. I believe Flaming River offers them www.flaming-river.com/. There are reasons GM went with the flexible coupler design on this car. I'm sticking with the Saginaw/GM rag joint in mine. The OEM coupler is still available through a number of suppliers and your local GM dealer.
This paper outlines some of the reasons why General Motors chose to use a flexible coupling rather than universal joints to connect the steering column directly to the steering gear.
