I had a strut rod break and open up. The eye opened quite a lot. I`m putting the adjustable rods in. I got the first one in on the side of the broken one. I really had to force it to line up. Is this normal or is something out of line.Maybe thats why the other one broke, it was only 4 years old.
Not smart struts, both ends adjust. It was off the ground. I put the end in by the diff and then ihad to try and bend it some to line up on the carrier. It was out of line by about 1 1/2 inches. I was able to push it that far.
When I did mine I seem to remember bringing the swing arms up to about normal ride height with the spring undun to get the end of the rod in the fork. When the rear wheels hang they swing in an arc so they would be offline. Think this is what you mean.
From your profile your car is a 75 so the alignment should be close with non offset strut rods however to install you must raise the trailing arm on the side you're working on to get a better fit. As the T-arm moves up and down it moves front and back.
FYI - 80 to 82 cars use offset struts as the diff strut rods mounts are offset from earlier cars. To reduce binding on all cars I prefer to use a rod end at one end of the rod to allow for rotation on street cars and for track cars use rod ends at both.
