Default fuel evaporator canister

Hello all. Has anybody changed the filter in the fuel evaporator canister? I own a 1972 stock 350. This canister is located on the driver side behind the front tire area. Looks like a coffee can, nothing scientific. The filter is a flat round piece of fiberglass. My question is this: how do you change this filter? Looks like the bottom of the canister might pop off? Does the filter just lay in there? My luck is usually bad luck, so I'm cautious before I tear things apart !! Thanks in advance for any help you could offer.

The filter does just lay in there.
It has been a while since I did this but the bottom came off very easily.

This is also on my "list" for this winter. Where can you get the filter's for these? I haven't been very sucessful but then again haven't looked real hard  I was thinking about just putting in a whole new cannister.

Changed the filter on my 71 350. The bottom snaps off. As far has changing canisters what i have read from this forum is to change it when you smell gas. I don't know if you can just get the charcoal or if you have to buy the cannister with it.

I did a post on this back a LONG time ago, it's pretty easy. You need to remove the driver's side rocker panel (metal trim on the outside under the door) After that, there's a small panel to be removed by 4 screws. Be careful because these large screws are only anchored to the fiberglass as I recall.

The filter bottom does pop off, there's small slots for a screw driver labels "pry here" The old fiberglass filter will probably disintigrate when you attempt to remove it. I just sucked it out with a shop vac :yesnod:

The new one gets fished between the filter bottom and the plastic retainer.

Hope this helps

Thanks everybody for your helpful input. I'll attempt this filter change this weekend.

SNODRGN - I purchased the evaporator canister filter from ZIP part #M2571
cost was around $4. Hope this helps!
