Default 2 Fuel filters

I bought my '74 last month and it came with 2 inline filters. A big one in the back by the gas tank, and another glass one in the engine compartment. I was told at Pep Boys that the one in the rear was put on aftermarket because records indicate there should only be 1 glass one. I was looking to replace the one in the back but now am thinking of just eliminating it altogether. Please advise.

I believe the 74 had an in the carb fuel filter. Any external fuel filters were added on after it left the factory. Those fuel filters might have been added for other reasons.

Thanks ChuckD. I just found the fuel line schematics in the '74 assembly manual. No filter in the rear. That leaves me with just the glass unit in engine bay.

Glass unit in the engine compartment is not stock. A glass filter can easily break and burn your car to the ground. Replace that thing now!

GM used filters in the carb. They never used a glass filter. I expect you probably have rubber line from the pump to carb as well. That should be replaced as well.

This is what can happen when a glass filter breaks.

Remove both your in-line filters and throw them in the trash. There should never be a filter on the suction side of a mechanical fuel pump, and the glass filter is not safe. Use only the stock in-carb filter and be sure the filter spring is still in the carb - you don't need any other aftermarket filters on a stock or near-stock car.

Default Rubber lines and glass filters.

WHat's an "in-carb" filter? Never heard of it. Right now I have an Edelbrock. I'm glad you guys mentioned it cuz now my first item on the agenda is to replace rubber lines and glass filter in engine bay. This is all new to me. I owned a '69 Camaro with rubber hoses and never had an issue but don't want to take a chance with my Stingray. Question: Do I need to replace the rubber line from bottom of gas tank to steel fuel line. It's only about a foot long.

I also had a glass filter on mine until I got onto this forum and heard horror stories about them causing engine fires, I REMOVED MINE ASAP!!!
Also installed a knife blade battery cutoff and now I sleep real soundly at night.
