This may be old news to alot of people but I was poking around the car during the thanksgiving holidays and eventually decided to remove the "crappy" spare tire and huge metal container that held it on.. probably ab 50-60 lb all together! But anyway once I got all that taken care of I rolled under the back looking up at the back of the gas tank and I saw a piece of paper hanging up there.. All I could see was that it was some factory document and I could see that it was from St. Louis. This made me really happy because I wanted to find out what plant my car was built at "being an 81" when all that change happened. I used a bent hacksaw blade to try and get most of it off without tearing it... It pretty much turned into dust when you touched it... I will include a scan of this later on. But Im wondering if anyone knows if this is where they put it on every car?? just never seen it before! Thanks!
I have read a number of items that describe the "tank sticker" as just that; the factory build sheet stuck to the top of the tank. I believe folks have even dropped their gas tanks to see if it was still there. Standard procedure to put it there on C3s, dont know about the others.
they put the factory build sheets there for the later C3s. Its about the only place you can find the original RPO codes. When they moved the plant to Bowling Green they began keeping better records, I think I heard that Chevy will send you your original build sheet if you send in the VIN, but only if was built in Bowling Green in 81 or maybe 82. I have a 78 and I have looked all over for it. Still looking...... Put the sheet in an archive sleeve and protect it!
So if you car did have a build sheet it was NOT built at bowling Green. Just curious, as I had a sheet up there also....but there was almost nothing left of it. Were cars from a particular plant better or worse ?
I didnt mean to imply that if it had a build sheet it wasnt built at Bowling Green. I had been doing some research to try and locate my RPO codes for my 78 to see how much of it was original and found several articles talking about the build sheet. Basically they said that copies of the Bowling Green records were retained by Chevy after the cars were built, but the St Louis plant didnt keep them. The build sheets have been found on top of gas tanks, under the carpet, tucked under the dash, numerous places... guess whichever guy was on shift during the final QC had his own place to put them.
25 to 30 kilos? That's including the spare tire itself? I have my carrier out too, but I don't think it weighs that much. Is there more weight to shed there?
Too bad for your tank sticker by the way, nice little detail to have I think.
I found the build sheet for my 73 on top of the gas tank when I dropped the tank to fix a water in the gas problem. It is 90% complete but very fragile.
I read somewhere that the build sheet can also be found rolled up and tucked up in behind the dash on some early C3's, not sure of how valid that is though.

I have read, from the guys in the know over at the NCRS DB, that a second build sheet can sometimes be found folded up between the tach and speedo or in the bottom of one of the seat springs.
I have mine from the gas tank but haven't seen another copy. My car now has 37000 miles on it but I have not removed the upper dash or tried reaching way up there.
I can see mine. It is probably hanging on by a piece of tape or something. I am too lazy to drop the tank just to see a bunch of codes for an '80 model. Ain't nobody going to care if I have it or not.

Yes including the tire, and the carrier. Then I also removed the plastic piece that is above the tire that separates it from the body. Altogether I would say at least 30-50 lbs, and I can feel the difference in the rear end when driving.
As for the paper I can read most of it but its in very bad shape and discolored, as soon as I can get my freakin scanner to work I will put a pic up. It says that the car was built in St. Louis So I dont know if its just one or the other that put these in the cars. Still pretty fascinating find!
