Default Tilt Wheel Column for 68??????????

Has anyone converted a van, pickup or other car tilt column into their 68? I would really like to have the tilt option without spending $500. It seems like there should be something that would work. Any input appreciated.

I put the Ididit tilt in my 68 and it was a smooth flawless installation. I got mine on ebay for 425.00 delivered to my door direct from Ididit.

I believe this has been discussed in the distant past, might do an archives search. Perhaps Jim Shea will chime in, but I believe you must use a 67-68 Column and there are no substitutes. You can physically use a 69-82 column, but you will have the key on the column instead of the dash.

I installed an 1980 vette tilt/telescoping column in my 68.
You need the column and brackets that bolt it to the car.
The 68 column is very short and narrow when you get under the dash.
I had to knock the 80 column shorter to fit and use the 80 brackets to fasten it to the 68 birdcage.
Nothing too difficult. I bought a steering column harness adapter that plugged into the 80 column and into the 68 dash harness, no cutting of any wires.
I could have removed the steering column ignition cylinder and patched it up but I liked having the steering column wheel lock so I am using it as an antitheft measure.
Here are a few pics. Do a search on here, I'm sure I have posted tons of pics and details in other threads.

How it is now.

This is the 80 column being test fitted.

Here's the 68 column brackets installed. These two need to be replaced with ones from an 80 vette.

68 bracket on top, 80 on bottom, see the difference in column diameter.

68 brackets top and bottom

80 bracket that bolts to windshield birdcage.

80 bracket that bolts to the above bracket.

If you go this route let me know, I can dig up other pics. Jim Shea is a great resource with steering questions. He has an endless array of knowledge and data.
