Thinking about replacing the body mount bushings over my Holiday Vacation. (When I turn hard right the fender barely rubs sometimes when hitting a bump) I believe its a clearance issue and do have the original mounts in the car.
I have read it can be done without major removal from the frame, basically by just lifting the body enough to replace the mounts, how easy or difficult is this? Any advice or directions would be appreciated.
p.s. My holiday vacation from college is shaping up to be more of a mechanics nightmare then a Christmas vacation. (and I cant wait)
Before you start on this project, check your #4 mounts first. There may be more in your future than just pulling a bushing and adding a new one!
In my case, I had some grinding, fabricating, drilling and welding to do to get the #4 mounts so I could install them. Not to mention new cage nuts on both sides as well as the reinforcements. I'm glad it's done now! Be sure you check all those items before you start tearing things apart. Just my .02.

I had the same experience on 2 of my Vettes. You do not have to take all 8 mounts out at the same time. PM you email address & I will send an article from Vette or Corvette Fever that gives step by step details. They recommend doing one side at a time worked great for me) other then the fabricating #4!
It all depends on how the bolts come out. Mine turned out to be a full off repair job. If you bolts come out without too much troulble then you are lucky. One of the Vette mags did an article on how to do it by just loosening the bolts. then use a floor jack to lift one side at a time leaving the bolts an replacing them one at a time. It did not get into much detail as to what all had to be removed while lifting the body but from my doing my car I still believe you have to remove the bumper brackets that attach to the frame, the steering rag joint, and the ground straps to get 2-3inches of lift on each side.
The chances of all the bolts coming out easy are slim. This is the way frame offs start. If you have problems with #2 or#3 mounts their is no turning back. I doubt body mounts are your problem.
Summit has the Energy Suspension brand polyurethane mounts for about $40-45 dollars. Eckler's sells Prothane poly, which has something of a bad reputation around here.
Check the condition of your #4 reinforcements and capture nuts before you order anything. My car has very little rust, but the nuts were completely frozen to the bolts at the #4 position and the reinforcements were crumbling. The other six bolts came out with no trouble.

Well I am not trying to get into a frame off.... anyone have any suggestions about what to do about the fender rub?
Factory cars from 78 or 79 that were ordered with 255s had the inside lip of the fender trimmed a bit. My 77 doesn't and it never rubbed, even with trashed body cushions. Some do, some don't.
Take a look at your body cushions (at least the #1 and #4 positions) and the #4 reinforcements. If they're bad, they need to be replaced - bad cushions can put strange stresses on the fiberglas and steel birdcage.
It's not horribly hard to change them without doing a frame-off, you just have to lift the body up a few inches one side at a time. The link I posted details the job I did on mine.

The condition you describe fender rub on a right turn when hitting a bump I have had happen. Modern tires are wider at the tread width than those used when your car was built that does not help the problem. Weak springs that make your car set lower in the front is the most common problem. I think your body mounts unless they have punched through the bird cage because of rust is not your problem.
If a #2 or #3 caged nut spins you have a problem changing the cushions if a new cage needs welded in.
I doubt my cars body mounts punched through the birdcage, my cage was actually in really good condition in spite of how bad the floor pans were. The only thing is I have new springs and shocks in the front, so I doubt its from sagging suspension. Just feel like it is probably from the body mounts being shot. I think I will just deal with it for now and wait till the summer to tackle the problem. (Trust me there is enough I have to tackle this winter break). Thanks for the support guys.
