i'm about to pull my rear end out could anyone give me any ideas on gearing i'm putting a new 383 with around 450hp @450 tq with a manual m20 shifter i have 410 know there to low how much higher should i go i would like to keep rpm under 3000 at 65 or around that i don't want to go to high because i like to play to and i may go to track thanks pete
3.55 with 235-60-15 tires gives you 66 MPH @ 3000 RPM and a first gear final ratio of 9.08 to 1. Matter of personal preference but that would be my choice. Check Keisler's speed analyzer on the link to the left. and plug in your tire size.
Not an auto, it's a 3 sp stick ( manual ) w/od.
The current set up has my "R"s too high at 70 mph.
The M-22 apparently is a close ratio with low gears.
I'm not a "straight liner", I prefer the open road and twisties.
A "long range bomber", if you will.
If you have a true M-22 then it is worth about $1500-$2000 in good shape. Not sure I'd go that much myselft for one but that's the range the last few I saw were. If you can get that much maybe it worth the switch the 5 spds tremic kits.
I'm hangin' on to the M-22. I'm a pack rat of sorts. I already have the 3 sp w/od, just have to put it in the shop for a rebuild/recon. It's been sitting for over 30 yrs and I don't recall the condition the last time it was used. I ran some numbers and figured about 2400 rpm at 75 mph, with the 3 sp w/od.
(I hope no one minds the size of text I'm usin'. I'm not yellin' at anybody, It just makes it easier for me to read. These ol' eyes just aren't as good as they used to was. )
I have an M22 in my car right now. It used to run with 3.08 which makes it a dog below 3500. After that it seemed like it would never stop pulling, even after 6000. I currently changed to 3.73, but for good traction in first, even that will be on the small side, as you need about 9:1 total ratio in first. 4.11's would be better, but these would be tiresome on the highways.... A 5-speed would be the ultimate combination with those, but $$$$$
IMHO, basicly, it all comes down to what you want, and in what gear you want it. I can't see drivin' cross country with
4:11's. In my case, that's exactly what I want, a cross country cruiser. My wife, a suit case, my guitar and amp, and time to travel.

(....and around 475 horses pushin' us along. )
Yea I'm with you on this....just purchased a 3:36 to repace 4:11's. Good for cruisin, engine and trans. little off on startup, but with lots of torque, not a big deal
