Default temp. sensor

I noticed that my '71 350cid had a temp. sensor in both heads with wire connected to them. I have just on gauge for water on console. I would think the sensor on driver side is for that gauge. What would the other before? Pulled engine so can't just pull one wire to see which one is for gauge.

Default Re: temp. sensor (rayray)

Your 71 should have been equipped with two temperature senders: one in the left side of the block for signals to your temperature gage and the one in the right side for your TCS (transmission controlled spark) solenoid. The TCS system in your 71, if it is like my 72, should have two green wires going to it. The TCS system is an early emissions device and uses water temperature to turn on or off the vacuum to the solenoid. A lot of folks do away with this and connect the vacuum directly to the carb but it is a fairly reliable system. My 72 TCS temperature sending unit has two prongs on it and a double green wire going to it.
