Lock Issues, need some advice please.
This 72 did not come with a key for the ALARM, or the spare tire TUB or the center storage compartment LID. Not even sure, if I had a key, if they are all keyed the same. The doors and ignition are all the same. I assume the others are the round key.
So my question is..can a locksmith, figure out the key pattern for one of the locks and then key the remaining locks the same?
Did a search, couldn't find anything....any advise would be appreciated
thanks, Mark
My 72 did not come with a key for the alarm, the spare tire lock, or the center storage compartment lock either. The round key unlocks them all. The 1972 uses a "D" keyway lock core.
When I tried to get a key made my local locksmith wanted to rekey the locks (the most economical method), but I want them to be original so I found www.jessersclassickeys.com and Peter Lindhal, the NCRS forum locksmith to provide keys without destroying the locks. You sould remove and send them the spare tire lock, the alarm lock, and the spare tire lock if possible to insure one key fits all.
If you have a good local locksmith, try him first.
Use a competent local locksmith. GM sidebar locks cannot be "picked". They either have the code printed on the side of the case, or they can be disassembled and a key fitted. If the locks are original to the car, the door key should fit the alarm, spare tire, and interior compartment locks. Good luck!
The locksmith may be able to do it. You might also check out the aftermarket parts suppliers; many of them sell complete sets of lock mechanisms and keys. The problem there is that you have to swap out the locks (doors are a PITA). I'm not sure which route would be less expensive.
For 1972 the ignition and door locks were keyed the same (square key) and the alarm, spare tire and storage compartment were keyed the same (round key).
In later years GM changed the keying so the round key unlocked the doors.
