Default Engine code help please!

I just bought a rough 69 coupe, and the motor doesn't seem original.
It was a 350/350HP based on the console ID plate, and as old and nasty it is, I believe its the original plate.

I checked nasty z28.com for codes, and this one didn't appear!

K0173TDS is stamped on the pad. Haven't got to the casting number; too much snow on the car!

Can anyone help?

Thanks, Joe

6th digit is a "T" for a truck/van application, I can't find a TDS suffix code, only TDR and TDT. If it is TSD, it is from an '82 truck.

I can't find TDS either. Are you sure that's what it is?

I will check casting numbers hopefully tomorrow.

Yes I'm pretty sure its TDS. I thought it might have been TOS, when I couldn't find TDS anywhere, so I doublechecked.... TDS is very clear to read..

I will try to post a good pic if I can get a clear enough shot of it.

Got the casting code. Its 3970010; which really narrows things down!

Heres a couple pics of the front pad. I googled all sorts of phrases related to the TDS suffix; nothing.

Anyone have an idea whats going on with it?

It's strange that there's no VIN derivative on the pad- why is the paint so fresh there and so dirty everywhere else?

I am curious about that too. Very curious! Funny thing is, there is no overspray around the pad, and it doesn't look like it was swabbed on.

I just bought this car...it IS rough and dirty and off the road for a number of years. Judging by the overall looks of the engine bay and the car in general, I can't imagine anyone was trying to deceive anyone.

Obviously not the original motor...but it is orange everywhere with no blue to be found.

Was there ever a replacement motor stamped with anything other than CE, maybe early on?

This is a comparatively new engine- it has the 'small' pad that started in the late 70s, so it is post the factory CE program.

seems like short pads started about '76-'77 ... certainly no earlier. That motor did not come in that 69

...yes, the "square pads" are of '77 and later.

...I found "TDS" to be 1980, 350ci, 170hp, 4bbl, manual transmission, truck application in the "Lime Book".

...near the bellhousing flange "peak", passenger side of peak, opposite your casting number, will be a date code. Will read like "B250" for February 25, 1980 or like D299, which would be April 29, 1979.

A=January

B=February

C=March

D=April

...and so on.
