I am removing a Holley 600 CFM carb, mechanical choke, that came with my car, and going back to original with the stock Q-Jet. I have all the parts, but have two questions: The heat stove cover plate, that mounts to the intake maniflold, has two chimney tubes through it. How long are they under the plate? Mine look like they have been cut to 1/2 inch and crimped closed. I suspect one may have been longer than the other, can anyone confirm their length. I have a 79 shop manual and several other manuals, but they are vague and poorly illustrated for what I need to know.
Also: The fast idle selenoid wire is gone for my Q-jet, does anyone know what color it is and its origin? I suspect it comes off the A/C relay, but I'm just guessing.
Thanks for the pictures guys! Actually, I have the two tubes that activate the choke outside the carb, but it is what is under the manifold choke lid that has me wondering.
bytor's picture is confusing to me, is the black thing in your picture link one of the tubes under the stove lid, I can't tell? OR...is it one continuous tube that makes a loop? One end leading to the choke and the other the fresh air fron the carb. Under my lid, two short 1/2 inch tubes extend into the manifold from the lid, they are both attached and have both crimped flat. The outside looks the same as you both have pictured. I understand they are not supposed to be crimped, but how long are they supposed to be under the lid, or is my guess above that they form a loop correct? I am concerned that I install everything correctly, but find the choke doesn't work correctly because the tubes under my lid are incorrect.
Art, my compressor has a green and black wire plugged into it, does the green wire get bridged to the selenoid, to increase idle as it is activated? I don't see any green wire at the relay. Thanks both for your reply.
Hello,I am an original owner of a 79 L 82,I do not have a fast idle soleniod on the car,it did not come from the factory with one. There is no electrics to the carb.I have a four speed, air car,do not know if an automatic has one and this being the difference? Hope this helps a little.Later Geno
Thanks Paul, that is exactly what I needed to see. bylor's picture was a little vague to me. The looped tube on mine was cut off and crimped. Now, where to find the plate with attached choke heat tube; I have everything else. It appears one more stop at the Bowtie parts man is in order. Thanks everyone who offered assistance.
Progress update: My manifold hot air loop tube was cut off and I can't locate a good unit, so I'm taking the easiest path. I followed this recent hot air choke thread advice http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1890629
and ordered an Edelbrock Q-Jet electric choke conversion from Jegs. It was $35 and I wish I hadn't already bought the two new outer choke tubes @ $26 from my local Chevy dealer. Driving around looking for parts is wearing real thin.
On the positive side, I found the green wire that goes to my fast idle selenoid wrapped back on itself in the harness. It even still has the terminal connector on it. I guess only the automatic A/C cars had it. Thanks for the heads up 69elky.
While I'm waiting for the delivery, I just need to make the hard vacuum line off the back of the carb for the brake booster. I should just plug it into an unused vacuum nipple, but I'm **** that way. Thanks, I should be rolling by Christmas! LOL
Thanks Paul, I appreciate the effort in finding the part. My order for the electric conversion is already in, so I'll just go with it. I was at Ecklers last Friday, I live about 30 minutes away, but they did not have the choke parts I needed. That would have been too convenient. My car is cruiser/ bracket racer, and will never be a NCRS class show car, so I'm not too concerned about originality.
Both those Corvettes are beautiful. Every time I see your green C-2 I think of my cousin. He had a green coupe that looked very similar. Like you, he kept that car immaculate and detailed it like it was going to be judged. I admired your 79 many times, beautiful car. My 79 is well cared for, anyone who didn't know me would think I'm a waxer. One of these days I will need to take and post a few pictures. This is one someone took and posted from the Summit Series last Aug.

I'm getting the car ready for the next race season. The 600 CFM Holley was holding the car back up top. I already had the 750 CFM Q-Jet, so putting it back to orginal was an easy decision. It should run a little stronger.
