I have an L88 hood for my small block 68. The hood fits well, but the center of the carb is about 3/4" forward of the center of the air cleaner hole. I need suggestions on what to do with it. The hood has an original-looking airbox assembly, but it is an aftermarket. I currently have a cheapo edelbrock triangle filter on to keep out the dirt, but I would like to put a real L88 cleaner assembly on. I have heard some say to cut the airbox and move it. I need some good advice.
If I'm understanding your problem correctly, you have some fudge room with the foam seal around the filter base. The airbox on mine was off almost as much as yours and still worked ok....
The smallblock and bigblock config is slightly different and that's why when using a smallblock the center of the carb doesn't line up. Too bad you aren't near me and we could swap out hoods. I have an L-88 hood w/out the cowl induction setup like yours but I do have a 427. I want to eventually fabricate some kind of cowl induction setup but haven't decided if I want to fiberglass in the L-88 box or build my own aluminum tray off the carb.
Thanks for the advice, everyone.. When the holidays are over I will start on this project. I think I would like to move the box, mainly for the finished look. I will give it a whirl. Any tips on cutting the old bond loose?
Get the air cleaner base and foam first. 3/4 of an inch is very small, and removing and reglassing the airbox for that is very difficult. Before you change anything get all the parts first and trial fit.
Remember too that the L-88 hood is designed for a big block. Leaving it alone and adding foam may be what you need to do simply to get the right height.
