need help speedometer cable keeps breaking on my 1977 corvette
i own a 1977 corvette l-48 with curis control my i have now replaced my speedometer lower cable twice when driveing after i replaced it both time the speedometer would read and bonce about 30mpg and lasted for about a block the would not read and a click would start i found that the speedometer block near the end that conects to the tranni and i assume that this was cazing the clicking sound but im a little stuck on why it might have broke any ideas (i was thinking the it my be the cruise controle for the wires are not conected do to preveous owner or would it be something els i need all ideas that any one has)
Correct me if I am wrong, but the cruise operates off of the upper cable.
This sounds like a possible cable routing issue. I know this too obvious, but have you checked the cable for smooth and easy bends - no kinks? Is the cable breaking at the trans or somewhere along the length?
thanks for the addvice. is there a way to bi pass the Cruise Control Transducer with out replacing it ? only be caz i was going to replace it when i tore apart my steering colum and replace the Cruise Control togle at the same time
You can buy a whole cable that is for a non-cruise car, but it's not fun replacing the part under the dash. Probably the cruise transducer is bad as previously stated. It has probably also taken out or at least weakened your speedo driven gear in the transmission, so I would replace it too. It is not hard or expensive to replace.
This is great info. The same thing keeps happening to me. I had already stipped all the cruise stuff out of my 77, or so I thought. I think it is time to get rid of the cruise transducer and get a 1 piece cable.
Use a cable from a 1969-1976, it is 72" long and will run from the speedo to the transmission direct.
The clicking noise scares me though.
Is this noise coming from inside the car? If your odometer is not working and the speedo is bouncing then you should go to our web site and look under the “repair suggestions”. There is a nice write up about what is going on with your speedometer.

This cable will work as a replacement for a cruise control car.
Same problem with my 82, had a bad transducer that was binding up. I already spent $40 + on 2 replacement cables, so I took apart the transducer and removed the worn parts that was causing the binding. Still looks stock except no cruise, which I don't use anyway AND didn't cost me $70 - $140 for a new transducer.
Good luck!
I had the same problem, turned out to be the transducer was seized up inside. I took it out and put a one piece speedo cable in and solved the problem. Got rid of the excess vacuum lines and changed the tilt lever on the column to one with no cruise.
It's not too bad to change the cable to a single cable. Kneel outside the car, and run your hand up the cable to back of speedo. There is a little tab that you push to release it. It's a little tight, but you should be able to do it. Then pull it out the firewall, and a grommit will come with it.
Just push the new cable back into the speedo, and it will snap in.
The trans end is as easy as crawing under the car.
Somebody told me that they used to make a connector that would connect the two cables together. However, I have never seen one.
thanks for all th info mmm i found out what was cazing the click it wasnt the cable but looks like my rear axle is lose and is nocking back and forth its not the blots for i took off the tier and resinched it down the whole right side of my axle is moving aaaaah so many problems any who does any one els know about there being a connector for the 2 cables i thought that i had seen it around but dont rember where i saw it thanks guy
Broken cable cores ... 'specially repeats ... have you verified they are adequately lubed? I've never seen a new one that came pre-lubed.
BTW ... Pioneer brand parts has an extensive array of OE replacement speedo/tach cables & cores. Find a parts house that sells Pioneer ... browse the hardcopy Pioneer "Powertrain" catalog. You'll see cables to fit any C3. Pioneer is a usa supplier that's been around a long time ... not vette specific.
