Detent cable not returning to idle position

Detent cable not returning to idle position
This is on an 80 TH350.
The detent cable doesn't seem to return to it's idle position, the carb just slides back through the detent cable's long slotted hole.
I assume there is a spring or something under the pan...anyone know if it's an easy fix?

All I know is that the TH350 detent cable connects to both a detent valve and a detent pressure regulator inside the valve body. I guess it's possible the valve is sticking though I've never seen that.
A couple things I have seen to cause your symptoms are:
1. Broken cable
2. Broken detent rod in transmission.
3. Melted cable from touching headers.
4. Detent cable not installed correctly on detent rod.
