Interesting thread, here are a few considerations:

Chinese parts, like many other things (from dresses to even food), are cheap and let an EU and american distributors be competitive on the market, that's why western companies go there and ask them to produce, instead of producing themself: OUR COSTS ARE TOO HIGH.

Of course this way, those companies that were once producers will only turn to be distributors and this will have on the long run disastreous consequences.

Why our costs are too high? Because chinese labour works 12 hours a day, get one third of our salary and if they even go to **** to the toilet there is a sniper in each factory that shoot them down.

Also because they just trough all their S... outside the door into the first river they can find, do you know how much cost to an EU co. to keep the enviroment clean of their junk? A LOOTTT!! Well, that adds to processing costs too.

This is called unfair competition...if chinese had to comply with all the western civilized rules their costs would be at least the same of ours and to be able to sell anything to us they would REALLY have to be BETTER and not only CHEAPER...

That's all

Default only America?

Not to stick up for china or any other country but they only will make what we accept from them they have a very high quality in accepting product from US I know this because where I work we send them orange and grapefruit product and if product don't meet their specs they will reject.EX. we had drums of pulp rejected because several drums had 1gram less in them than what they require that is the truth.
I have to laugh at people that say only American if that is the case they better stop using anything electrical .Also when it says made in America does that mean part was made or assemble in America ?more than likely assemble .Just my opinion. The bottom line it's only what we accept.

I would suggest that the real problem is that those foreign parts are generally of very high quality. Difficult to compete with their labour rates. The pic shows a NAPA horn relay that has functioned flawlessly in my 1967 for two years (note Made in India). My voltage regulator (solid state) is a Wells VR715 that is "Assembled in United States." I suspect it is Chinese or Taiwanese. These parts are about 25% the cost of original equivalents.

They'll accept only top quality products when importing ONLY because those who can effort to buy them are 1.000 times richer then the average worker and then pretend the best of the cream...For example they export cheap bags at 2 euros each into europe but at the same time they can effort (those few of course) to buy and import an original Armani or D&G bag at 1.000 euros each...

Going back to fruit, you can bet (and win) that 95% of chinese have never even taste a grapefruit in his life...

Panic nailed this one , I might add, go around your house and find out where all your stuff is made, you might be suprised to find most of it is made offshore and most of the offshore stuff is made in China. They have cities that make shirts, nothing else, the whole city makes shirts and I'll bet everyone has one in their dresser, nuff said

Oh and to stay on topic they make allot of real crappy Corvette parts too

Some trivia..way back in the late 60's early 70's Germany had the best Forgings and castings for camshafts ect. Leinwebber comes to mind. The reason was They had such a Great supply of Excellent Steel as they melted down their WW2 arsenal of Armored Vehicles. We had allready recycled ours, several times By the 70's.
Its alot about Materials IMO.

The largest single issue is the fact the north american continent is out of iron ore.....we simply do not have that resource so much anymore....

S/America does, so does China/Asia.....cheaper to ship finished goods than ore....cost/unit/value/etc.....

but shipping JUNK is entirely another story....
