Guys, transmission is probablly my weakest point, this is a pic of the driveshaft on my Chevelle, I know this isnt right but what is the easiest way to get it right? New driveshaft, new transmission, new snout( I dont know if I can even buy just the snout) I think the guy I bought it from had a 9" snout on a T400 and replaced it with a 6" snouted T350, does that look like the problem? this seems pretty dangerous to me. I have only driven the car about 5 miles and at low speeds but I am not going back ont eh road until this is rectified, please let me know your thoughts and solutions.
Thanks,
Don
That is definitely not safe. Not near enough engagement on the output shaft. If you take a measurement from the rear face of the tail housing to the center of the front u-joint it should be 3". Your's looks more like 6" or 7".
You might try DTS(Drivetrain Specialists) in TX for a new yoke or have a driveshaft built that is longer then the current one.
thanks for the info guys, I am going to do alittle looking around to see what I can have done with the shaft, one other thing is it seems to be in as far as it goes, I had removed it to replace the output seal and when I reinstalled I could only get it this far in, thats why I was going for the trans as the issue.
If you that much of the yoke sticking and you can't push it in any further. You may have twisted the splines on the output shaft or yoke or worse yet both. The tailshaft housing is matched with the output shaft of the trans. Putting a longer tail housing will not solve your problem. You will still have a short out put shaft.
OK I have done some measuring and found a 6" tail shaft and 3 extra inches of yoke sticking out, The only TH400s I can find with a 9" tail shaft are B/O/P ones, is the difference in the bolt pattern where it mates to the block? I want to go with the TH400 because the BBC I am planning on building will eat TH350 quickly. Anybody heard of a 9" tailshaft on a Chevy TH400?

This out of my ATSG for the TH400. Looks like most TH400's will have the 9 1/2" tail shaft. Corvettes & trucks used the 4", Cadillac used a 13 1/2".
You can not use a B-O-P tranny w/o getting an adaptor plate. If you can't find a Chevy TH400 easily then ask over in the Parts For Sale section as I've seen a few short tailshaft trannys for a reasonable price. The tailshafts are all the same, so you could use a 9 1/2" tailshaft from a B-O-P tranny. Be sure to also get the output shaft that matches & the yoke. The yokes from a TH350 & a TH400 are not interchangeable. Look, you are building a BB, I'd install the tranny & then have a shop build a custom drive shaft to fit or rebuild yours to fit, I wouldn't reuse your old one, as is.

Thankyou, I am realizing I will have to do both the DS and the Trans. I was hoping to save the expense of one or the other, at least for a little while, but there is no avoiding it. I guess I need to stick with the "Why do it if its wrong" philosiphy or I will end up with something similar to what I already have.... thanks again.
