Default best way to remove steering coupler?

I have an 80' that I am prepping for a body lift. Can anyone give advice on the best way to remove the steering coupler? Does the the column have to be removed or moved?
Thanks,
Stephen

Loosen the two clamp bolts on the coupler, remove the bolts holding the steering column in place, then try to slide the column back. You might have to use a screwdriver or small prybar to get the coupler to let go.

I loosened the the two collar clamps and the bolts holding the coupler and pried them apart, gently.

Either the column has to be moved back into the driver compartment by about 2 inches or the gear mounting bolts have to be removed so that the gear can be tipped to make room for the flex coupling to be removed from the gear shaft.

I don't suggest prying on the flex coupling because you might collapse the steering column shaft back into the steering column. The steering column shaft can be a devil to get back out to its original length.

Follow Jim's advice. You will not even know you collapsed the column until you go to put the rag back and it doesn't fit flat. Mark the column at the firewall with chaulk and you'll be able to see if it moves back on you.

I should clarify...I was talking about prying parallel to the clamp bolt in order to spread the "ears" of the coupler - not prying against the steering column. In my experience, the metal of the coupler flange sometimes "sets" in place and needs some persuasion to let go of the steering column splines.

Here's some pics that show the column being removed.... FYI, it may help.

Thanks for the photos. I think I'm going to pull the column out now. The whole thing isn't even secured. The column moves from side to side. I think the mount may be broken.
Thanks,
Stephen
