I had one of my front wheel studs break off today. All the lug nuts were loose. I guess I was lucky the tire didn't fall off. Anyway if anyone has replaced a front wheel stud I would appreciate it if you would share the procedure with me.
I haven't done it on the Vette, but it should be an easy tap-out, pull-in-w/stacked washers type of job. If the hole enlarged, local parts stores sell oversized studs. Hope this helps.
You may want to replace all of them. What happened to make them come off?
As much as I hate to admit it, I must have tightened them all except that wheel. I'm normally very consciencious about such things, star pattern, torque wrench, incremental torquing, etc.
I recently repacked and adjusted my front wheel bearings... so I've been in the "neighborhood." It shouldn't be too
difficult... I believe you may be able to tap the studs out while the rotor/spindle is in-place (wheel removed of course).
If that doesn't work (I can't remember what the clearance is exactly), then hang the caliper with a suitable wire (so you
don't need to bother disconnecting the brake line), remove the hardware holding the outer wheel bearing in, and then
remove the rotor. You can then tap the spindle from the rotor, and then easily service any of your studs. Make
sure you carefully adjust the wheel bearing when putting it all back together.
The shop I work at does mostly contract work (U-Hauls, Canada Post, etc...) and while walking through the shop one day I saw a Postal unit with a broken stud. I ask Grant, the mechanic, how he was going to remove it. He said he usually just pounds them out. To re-install you just insert it from behind and draw it in with some washers and the proper size nut. Piece of cake. Allthough I suppose you could press them in too if you have a press handy.
