Hello All, Can anyone talk me through the process of removing the dash from my 78? Does the instrument cluster, gauge cluster, radio, steering column, need to be removed first or can some of this remain in and come out with the whole unit?
You can take the speedo section out and the gauge cluster out also the more you remove first the easier the carrier (dash) unit will be to get out.You dont have to remove the steering column if you don't want to but you do have to lower it but if you take it out that is just one more part out of your way.Hope this will help any more questions just ask.Just don't try to force things if you don't have to cause some of the parts can be brittle for there age.
Are you taking the dash pad out? You should remove as much as you can. The pad will need to be carefull heated with a hair dryer or heat gun(carefully) in the corners by the A-pillars (without heating, the dash will most likely crack). These are small triangle shaped sections by the A-piller and they must be pulled upward to clear the A-pillars. Then and only then can the dash be removed, it should pull strait out, there are just some spring clips holding it in the speaker area, it may take alittle prying but it should come. Install will be the same with the heating of the corners. Good luck !
Please remember to unhook the battery. I didn't the first time I removed the spedo/tach cluster and ruined the circuit board on the back. I touched it to the metal part of the dash and cooked it. (Cost me $100.)
