Default This is not good. Broken spindle flange

Was just out doing some work on the rear suspension. Torqueing up the spindle flange bolts and I could not get the torque I needed. Almost felt like the bolt was stretching. Closer look. Oh crap!

Time for a new flange

Better you noticed when you did....could have done some nasty damage out on the road if it decided to disintegrate.

I had this happen this fall on a '68-just put a new flange on. Easy fix.

That sux, was the flange pulling down square and just that one bolt didn't want to get tight?
At least you don't have to pull the whole TA apart, just drop the shaft and change the flange.

The flange was flat against the half shaft. I did not have to pull it in at all. It was just cracked. I have it off and it is tough to see the crack when the bolt is not tight. It may have been there for a while. I'll just get a new flange and put it back on. I checked the other side and it is fine. The flange torqued up nicely with no cracks. No big deal. Just another 70+ dollars.

Shoot, what's $70 when you own corvettes like us? We are all made of money, right? At least that is what my buddies at work think anyway.

Good thing you found it when you did. I would be afraid that might come apart and do some big damage. I don't think it would allow the wheel to leave the car but the half shaft could do some damage back there flailing around. I guess I need to take a look at mine this winter. Good find.

Good catch on that one! Just encouraged me to do a good inspection of mine.

There is a half shaft loop in there. It is barely visible in the first picture. Actually looks like fuzz in the upper right hand corner. Still would have made a heck of a racket and done some damage.

Just pulled the driveshaft out also and my rear ujoint seems very rough. Took it out and it looks like it is brinelled. I have checked the angles and there is a difference from the shaft to the diff pinion. Only had maybe 4K miles on it. Very tough miles though. Time for some solid Spicers and a balance of the shaft. This was one of the early Keisler kits and the shaft has no weights on it, guessing it needs a balance seeing I was getting some vibration.

Very tough miles indeed! There's a driveline shop in Howell that does alot of race cars and they have a good reputation. What was the torque for the flange nut?....I'm afraid to put my 73 on your lift for an exam....

You and I are kind of hard on our old Vettes. I bet that your spindles are also gone once you take it apart.

Time to upgrade to better parts

I have checked the spindles a few times and the splines are not twisted. I am pushing my luck with these though. One is an original the other was replaced about 15 years ago by a previous owner. Without going to a TOMS setup is there a better spindle out there other than the stock ones?

I pulled the driveshaft also and had a bad Ujoint. Felt a little rough. These were the original ones from the shaft Keisler sent with the kit. I just had a set of solid Spicers put in and the shaft balanced.

Brinelled? what does that mean?

After spending two years on my back under the car I've been very lazy not to get under there and check things out closely. Both my spindles are also original with no twisting and were in great shape when the TA's were rebuilt.
I'm temped to consider those ramps that get the car a few feet off the ground...or build my own. I won't have a garage big enough for a lift.
Must be nice now that you have that lift.
Got some pics of the car on the new lift???

Brinelled is when the rollers have not moved and they indent the post that the cap goes on. I can see little indentations in there and the joint was rough feeling. I have to recheck my driveline angles. Might just be a cheaper joint also. My old solid Spicers never did this. These were the greasable type of ujoint.

Here is a picture of the car on the lift. It will go a little higher. I can easily stand under the car with no problem. The top at full up on the lift is about 10 inches from the ceiling.
