Default quick question on timing

on my 77, the exhaust flow is not steady at all and sputters at times. I have adjusted the fuel air mixture slightly and that corrected the problem slightly but not entirely. Should I have the timing adjusted?

Not sure exactly what your looking at on the exhaust. But, since your tuning, make sure your timing is working corectly. Look thru the distributor to make sure the advance mechanism is working smoothly, bushings not worn, springs installed correctly etc. Then map your timing. You need to know what the advance is at what speed, then go from there

It sounds like you are describing a "missed" firing. Have you checked out your plugs, wires, cap and the rest of the distributor?

I say it a timing issue also, or at least something in the ignition.

Always check and set timing before ever touching the carb: "90% of all carb problems are ignition problems." Timing needs to be 36 degrees total, and you need to have your vacuum advance functional and correctly hooked up to manifold vacuum. Once that's done, you can play with carb and mixtures. Timing affects the carb - the carb does not affect timing.
