Default New Starter

Hello,
I just put a new 383 into my 79. It has headers and yada yada yada ... now I need a new starter.

By the way, I already tried a powermaster gear reduction starter, and it was a piece of junk!! It worked great for 5-6 starts then the starter gear would no longer stay engaged.

Per a recommendation in another post I saw, you can get a facotry gm lightweight starter by going to autozone or napa and asking for a starter for a 98 chevy pickup. Is this a good route to go?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Jim

Thanks a lot. I'll go pick one up tomorrow.
At Autozone, the cheapest 1 yr warr. starter I see on their website is $84.99
For the lifetime warr. it is $99.99

I have been running the GM one on mine for about 5 years now with no problems at all. No heat soak ever. Start right up under all conditions.

Is that for 153 tooth only or 168 also?

I sure hope it is for a 168 tooth, stagger bolt mount, because that's what mine is.

The GM part# is 9000852. This is the starter Chevy uses on the 502 big block and fits all SB or BB with a 14" 168 tooth flywheel (staggered bolts).

One note. You cannot use your stock bolts. The correct bolts are special with metric shanks and standard threads. GM part# for the bolts is 12338064 and you can get them from any dealer.

Great starter. Had mine for several years now.

Edit. Here is a picture for your reference:

Steve, thanks for that bolt part #. Mine is currently held up with one of the weird correct bolts and one old-school starter bolt with about four washers stacked under it to take up the slack.

For a 153 tooth flywheel, I would use this one. Note the bolt numbers as well.

10455709 - Starter, Gear Reduction 153 Tooth L-98 Corvette Style, BRAND NEW. No core charge. This lightweight starter was introduced on 1988-95 Corvettes. Its internal gear reduction multiplies torque for fast starts. It weights just 10.14 lbs - 9 lbs less than a conventional starter. This compact starter also offers additional clearance for competition oil pans and chassis components. Use starter bolt P/N's 14097278 and 14097279.

Be careful though: Technical Notes: Use with 12-3/4” outside diameter flywheel. Pre-LT1 engines require starter machine work. All starters sold at GILBERT CHEVROLET are modified to work.
