Default paint question

When stripping the car, how much should I actually take off before painting, ie-hood, headlight doors, doors? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the guy doing mine too the doors, hood, and t-tops off. He painted the headlight bezzels with the lights up...I like it because the seam between the lights up and down is much cleaner, then he put the headlights down, and the doors on(after doing the jambs with the doors off and the hoods drip edges), then he put the hood on, and painted the "outside" of the car all at once. it turned out great, he loosed up the bumper to get paint between the crack, but if I would have done it, I would have done it with the bumpers off...I think it'd be easier to get the undersides if it was on a bench(saw horses).

Just my .02

yes take EVERYthing off the car.. leave it a Shell.. how I'm gunna do mine is everything (even interior will be out) doors off, shoot the inside first, and then jambs.. etc.. then assembly and paint with the doors open (so you can get that little overhang from the B- pillar to the door.

I had problems getting the healights back in and not scratching things. If it wasn't cause I changed the pivot bushings, I would have never removed them.

Click on the link in my signature to view photos of stipped car to finished car (less interior). I did as others have said here. Took everything out of and off of the car. Well worth the work (much better paint job).

I thought I would like to have the headlights out to paint my 73 until I did a dry run installation. I soon realized that trying to install them after painting would be very risky. I did all my body work and fitting with them back on them I removed them for final sanding and I edge painted them and then reinstalled them. I'm glad I did. No scatches to worry about. Good Luck, Craig :chevy
