I am working on a 79. We broke the engine and will be installing a ZZ4 with fast burn heads. Needless to say the old style headers do not line up wityh the D port exhaust. Anyone know who makes a header for this style head for the 79? Thanks in advance.
Dynomax sells a full length set that fits fine on ZZ4 heads. They have oval ports so they don't cover any of the exhaust port. You can get them at Summit Racing or Jegs.
I was worried about the missmatch also. I had an opportunity to talk to an Edelbrock intake manifold designer. He said the mismatch would not noticeably affect engine power since the missmatch is so slight and the exhaust gas is so energetic. He said a missmatch would be a problem if it occurred between the cylinder head and the intake manifold.
I installed Hedman sidepipe headers. They are made for the 1969 Corvette engine. Anyhow I laid a D port gasket against the header flange. There was not really much of a missmatch. I got out a grinder and ground down the header flange to match the D port gasket. This worked very nicely. After grinding down the flange, I set the headers off to be coated with silver ceramic (Jet Hot).
