Default Flex exhaust pipe

Has anyone ever used that flexable exhaust pipe that places like advance auto parts sell. It comes in 8 foot section and is made by walker exhaust (dynomax).

Bad news...looks cheesy and is not very conducive to flow. Best left to diesel trucks.

I am using it as a temporarry fix until I can get the car to an exhaust shop to get a proper system welded in place, expect leaks if you keep it on too long.,

Yes, and some use it as a "template" to get the pipe in the correct shape with all the bends first, and then have a muffler shop bend a solid piece to match for the permanent installation.

What type of clamp would be good to use. Right now the car has a 2.25in system on it and what happened was the header would keep leaking where the exhaust meets the exhaust shop made some kind of buldge that the flage would press fit in to the header when you bolted it together. This did not work the exhaust kept comping lose at the header becuase the flange would come off. So i cut that part off and got some reducers and the exhaust pipe slides in it but there is about a 1/4 inch gap. I was going to get it weled up but its close to the floor pan and if i have it welded i will not be able to remove the exhuast. So what type of clamp would be good. i tried the u bolt style you get at the parts store with no luck it just crushed the pipe.

i thought about those but the problem is that the pipe is kind of offset in side the other pipe and i am affraid that that type of clamp might not seal it due to it being off set inside the pipe.

I have a 21/2" reducer on mine and the tubing slipped right over...maybe these will help?

Actually it worked pretty well until I tightened the clamp in teh bottom picture front left, (pretty much in teh center of the pic) the clamp had actually been installed pointing down and I caught it on a speed bump so it pulled back. when I retightened it I didnt make sure I was clamping onto the reducer so I actually caused one of hte seams to split. Other than that the ones up front work fine. there is also one at each muffler because I didnt buy factory mufflers with the bend pipe already attached to them

these tend to get loose when the system heats up causing the muffler to sag a little it is hard to get teh tips to stay level but welding should fix all this.

the first pic doesnt actually show what I thought it did, you can disregard it.

It is 2 1/2" all the way through, it was a "slip fit" over the reducer at the header but I had to use the band clamp type to attach the mufflers because they were exactly the same size as the flex tube.

In some states, including Michigan, that type of flex tubing was not legal, however this was many years ago and the laws might have changed. In any event, I would use only as a very temporary fix.

Default flex pipe system

Yes I have a 2 1/2" flex pipe setup from the headers back to the mufflers. I built a h-pipe from tubing , had it welded and ground smooth. does it look good? to some, does it work? sounds great and performance is good. system was a temp fix until I can afford a mandrel bent 2 1/2" system. I have a few minor leakage and used regular clamps. Here in alabama rust is not a issue and the car never sees rain. I forgot to mention it scrapes when I hit a dip in the road because my vette is lowered. have 3" clearance under pipes.

I did the exact same setup on a pick up truck that I restored a couple of years ago. Mainly did it to get it to the muffler shop, but it worked so well I decided to leave it and welded it to the collectors. About a year later it split and broke in two and the pipe hit the ground at 80mph. Dont trust them at critical points in your system, the ridges will start rusting and possibly break like mine did.

That flexible pipe is a temporary fix at best. I use to sell loads of it. Here in Southeastern Michigan the fact that there are no restrictions as to what can be used on cars or safety inspections anything goes. There are more junks on the road here than in the junk yards. They merely drive them into the ground here and when they quit or fall apart just walk away.

This is a very interesting thread.
Do you know who sells these flex pipes?
Are they available in 3 inch (diameter) size?

It's not a long term solution. I think it's cheaper than calling a flat bed to get the car to the muffler shop.
It's good to create a template for the muffler guys.
