Default Tie Rod Setting

I am installing new tie rods on my 72. What is the procedure for the initial setting on the tie rod ends? How far should they be threaded in for the initial install?

A good rule of thumb is to count the turns it takes to remove the old one and screw the new one in the same number of turns. That usually gets you in the ball park then you can set the toe in and center the steering wheel with fine adjustments.

You want to get the point to point measurement as close to possible as the tie rod ends you are removing. If you didn't measure before hand, I would screw each tie rod end about 1/2 way in, and then see how the wheels point, adjust from there.

If you have too, you can rough them in using a tape measure to get equal distance between the tires on the front and rear sides.

I just pulled my tie rod ends out to replace them. I counted 8 threads sticking out between the tie rod end and the sleeve on all 4 tie rods. The trick is to set them all up the same. Then you adjust them equally to get the correct toe-in.

it doesn't really matter as long as you have the inner and outer tierod threaded in the same length, then you can adjust it longer or shorter to get the toe set
