Just saw a 72 on ebay with the name plate below the shifter that said 9.0:1 comp ratio. the vin had a K in it which is I believe the base motor. Could this be true. I have a 72 and it says 8.5:1 and I thought the LT-1's were 9.5:1
Base motor was 8.5 to 1. The LT1 motors were 9.0 to 1.
The LT-1 was rated 255 net HP.
In '71 275 net HP with a gross rating of 330 HP. There are some who claim the '71 and '72 engines are identical, but I can't believe GM would underrate an engine as the power levels were dropping.
There may have been some minor differences, but the same option coded engines between '71 & '72 were essentially identical except for the ratings (SAE gross vs. SAE net).

I have owned both '71 & '72 LT-1's & the engines are almost identical.
The '71 block was a 0010 cast# while the '72 was 0014. The '71 heads were #487 & '72 were #487X. Both cars would run in the mid 13's.
