The Drivers Side Speaker Went Out On My 76 A Few Months Ago. You Can Check This Using A Meter To Check Continuity Between The Green And Black Wire. There Is A Quick-disconnect Coming Out Of The Radio And Going To The Speaker. If You Have To Change The Speaker-good Luck-it Is A Pita. I Replaced Both Of Mine With Pioneer Ts-g4641r. You Can Still Find Nos Occasionally On E-bay And I Also Found The Gm Replacement At A Chevy Dealer.
is it a stereo or monoral? if it's mono, one speaker working indicates the radio and amp are ok and the problem is wiring or a bad speaker. if it's stereo, it could be bad channel in radio, amp, wiring or bad speaker. don't run these radios without a speaker attached. if you can get to the amp wires(behind the right side dash) disconnect the wires going to the speakers. mommentarily touch the speaker wires with an ohm meter or a 1 1/2 volt battery. you should hear static in the speaker. if that's ok, put your meter on low volt scale(5v or so) and test the output from the radio with the volume turned down. you should see some voltage(0.5 or so). if you do, it's the amp. otherwise it's the radio.
Again, if it is NOT a stereo amp, your problem is either the speaker has gone bad OR the wiring to that speaker is defective/loose. If it is a stereo amp radio, the last stage of amplification is on the "convector" unit behind the passenger-side dash pad. To diagnose whether it is a speaker-or-amp problem, swap the signal lines for the right and left channels going TO the convector. If the 'good' sound moves to the other side's speaker, the power transistor on the convector (for that channel) is likely bad. [It could be something else...another component on the convector, other wiring problem, something in the pre-amp inside the radio...but odds are with you that the power transistor is the problem.] If the SAME speaker is working and still nothing out of the bad one, then the speaker or wiring to that speaker is defective. Good luck.
thanks for all of your help have opened uptop of consol and can see speaker and have found connection to passenger speaker (the one not working) will get another speaker and hook up and see what happeens. If it is the speaker, it appers to be truly a -pan in the axx to swap out.

You have to remove the upper dash. It's not hard but time consuming. E-mail me and I will send you a link which tells you how to do this. By the way- I can also help you on the speaker selection if you want. I have some hints.
I don't know specifics about the '76, but I chose not to completely remove the dash in my '71 [to do the speaker changes] because of the risk of breaking/damaging the dash. If you remove the right dash panel and dash pad hardware and remove screws from the driver's dash panel, you should be able to lift the pad enough to get the speaker carriers out and install new speakers. Obviously, if you can remove the whole dash panel successfully, that would be ideal....but if you get it in a bind, think twice about the complete removal.
