I went with the stock style rag joint when I still had the stock steering setup in my car based on Jim Shea's advice. I knew he was the steering guru and I trusted his guidance.

I can tell that is knockoff due to the incorrect pinch bolt. Probably made by the same people who made the bad one I got from a Corvette dealer. Get a correct one from GM and avoid problems.

Just ordered the GM rag joint Gary recommended (7818568) from GM PartsDirect for $58.58, plus their usual excessive shipping, $14. Hope it is the good one because no picture shown.

They also have the rear half shaft french locks for 58 cents each, which were the subject of another post.

Will let you know what shows up.

Ralph.

Ralph,

That's a good price, better then I get at a dealer. Forget about those the GM locks they'll wrap up at 50 ft/lbs on you. Try them but if you want the SS ones I use let me know. They are so much better. I've throw out the GM locks I had here that's how much I like the SS ones.

The 67-e69 rags cost more over $100 list now. I have 1-2 left. Not sure how long any will be around for. I've been telling guys to get them while they can. As soon as the GM stock drys up then the imported crap will be all that's left.

I hear the source for the current aftermarket and good quality 63-66 is going to stop soon so those years will be affected once dealer/vendor stock sells out. I have one NOS GM rag for a 63-66 std column and it's worth about double that of the 67-82 joints.

So to put in the replacement do I just mark the position, loosen the pinch bolts on the rag joint, then drop the steering column and pull back a touch on it towards the cabin? Just pulling it inward enough to get clearance to change it out?

Is it really as simple as 4 bolts? 2 on the rag and the 2 under the steering column or am I missing something?
