Default Temp Sensors for Vortec Heads

I have a question about the temp sensors in the heads. Im finishing up a Vortec swap on my 1971 L48. The old sensors are much bigger in thread size than the sensor holes in the late model heads. Im curious what people are doing to get their sensors hooked up?

I put the stock temp. sender in the intake manifold, near the thermostat housing.

I wonder if it would be bad for the head to drill and tap the smaller hole to fit the stock sensor.

I believe there is a sensor in each head, does it matter which one I use?

The stock sender for the temp gauge is in the driver's side head. The passenger side head wad the TCS switch, but I don't know that have or would need to have it. Most stock TCS switched get removed anyway.

I installed World Products SR Torquer heads on my L48 a few years back and ran into the same problem. I ended up drilling the heads with a hand drill and tapping them with the correct size thread for the original sensor. I have to say it was a pucker 10 and I was really worried about screwing up a brand new set of heads. But as it turned out I had no problems and no leaks. If you're not sure of your skills or would just rather have it done for you I'm sure a competent machine shop could drill the heads and tap them for a reasonable price.

Also, at the time I had my original intake manifold on the engine. If I had my current manifold I probably would have installed the sensor in the intake. Drilling those heads made me very nervous.

I think if I had to attempt that I wouldn't have any problems, but I cannot speak for the OP.

Apparently 'corvette paramedics' has a sensor, but original connector will not work. I used a gm one from I forget what year, make and model. The resistance was the same and screwed right in. Give me a couple days and might be able to give you a part #
