Yes I have done a search and came up with alot of stuff on the chambered exhaust. I want to hear what people who have them think about it. I am thinking of getting this setup and running it with headers. So if you have chambered exhuast chime in. Do not even bother posting if you do not have the chambered system.. I do not want to hear get flowmasters or any other type of exhuast.
I have the Mid America system on my '69 L-71 with stock exhaust manifolds. They will be a little louder with headers. Mine are sweet sounding, but I am hard of hearing to begin with.
I've got the Allens aluminized Chambered "2" exhaust. 2 1/2 inch, four chamber ( Two per side) system. To me its plenty loud enough. I would not want anything louder. Its got a rumble at low rpm, but really starts coming alive at around 2500-3000rpm. At 4000rpm and up it sounds like a nascar stocker. Its snarls, and snaps and pops when lifting off the the throttle. I run a ZZ4 w/flowtech ceramic headers. I have received a ton of compliments on the way the car sounds. Thats the good news. The bad news is I have a funny "droning" sound now in the cabin w/the t-tops in. W/ the tops off, its not nearly as bad, but its still there. I plan on putting heat/sound barrier under my rug this winter when I pull the seats out to get re-upholstered. Oh ya, it cost about $500, and I still had to have speed shop/muffler shop tweek the pipes to fit right. But to be fair, I also run a 'glass rear spring, and thats where the biggest problem was. If you have a 'glass spring you want at least 3 inch clearance. I also run a heat shield on the spring. Sorry such a long response. Good luck
cool I have the yearone roller motor its basically a zz430 clone. I have 2.25 inch from the header back with dynomax super turbos now and i have bad interior drone at cruise. Im switching from that becuase the muffler guys that did it when they bent the pipe its smaller than 2.25. That and i had to cut the exhuast to do some work and do not want to reuse the old hack job.
I have the 2.5" Mid America system on my 70 350 with headers. It sounds awesome at idle, gets fairly loud when you're cruising and you will definetely turn heads when you jump in the throttle.
I have had two sets, one on my 64 I had and one on my 70 BB car now. I got both sets from the same guy on Ebay. I think they are Allen's or just like it. I love the sound, a bit loud, but a great sound. I am using stock exhaust manifolds.
I have the one's from Mid-America on my 73 small block with stock manifolds and I love the sound not to loud for me nice sound at idle and they roar when you get in the throttle
I have the Mid America 2.5" system on my car. As everyone above me stated... yes, it's pretty loud. I drove it true dual for a couple of summers before I added a crossover pipe behind the transmission and that mellowed out the tone a little bit. Are they restrictive? I'd say yes. I have dumps just after the manifolds and opening them up at the dragstrip added abotu 3mph to my 1/4 mile speed. I'm not sure how to translate that to hp lost but I'll leave that up to you to decide. Overall I'm happy with the exhaust system.
I ran Mid-America 2-1/2" chambered on my '69 with the 350/350 and Hooker Super Comps, got lots of compliments, changed motor to SB 427 and Tremec TKO 600 with same exhaust - Still great sound and quiet at 70 mph! Only downside I see is alerting all police within a mile every time I break 1/4 throttle . However.....I am considering changing to mandel bent 2-1/2 with x-pipe in my quest to break 415 rwhp.
I have had a Mid America chambered system on my header equipped 73 for quite a few years now. I agree with everyone that it is loud, but I do enjoy the sound. I am sure the system is restrictive but I am satisfied with the performance of my car. The performance loss is worth getting rid of those damn ugly 73 OEM style mufflers. If I were to change exhaust systems it would be to get a side exhaust system.
I ordered a set of chambered undercar exhaust from a guy on ebay (seller is hrvette, if I remember correctly). I was kind of warned that all my neighbors will constantly show me that I'm number one, but I love that sound so much. Especially when driving the car out of underground parking lot in these long echo-sounding corridors!!
Back in the 70's when I worked at the dealer, I sold Camaro and Chevelle chambered systems over the counter and I can still remember the great sound. I currently have an Allen's 4 muffler system and it sounds great and is a head turner. Two things; the current chambered mufflers are louder than the original OEM versions, because the inner baffle tubing is the same I.D. as the inlet and outlet. The OEM's used a smaller I.D. baffle which made them quieter and reduced flow. Second, not all chambered mufflers are equal today. The more sound deadening holes there are in the inner baffle tubing the quieter the sound will be. Fewer holes will be louder. They all look exactly the same on the outside, but to avoid disappointment deal directly with a manufacturer that knows the product such as Allen's. The 650 hole 4 muffler systems are almost always too loud for most people whereas the 1500 hole 4 muffler systems are usually just right for most tastes. It may cost more than an auction, but at least you know what you are getting and it's an investment that will last a long time.
I have the mid-america chambered exhaust 2.5. on my 77. It is too loud for me. The sound doesn't seem to match the car. If it was a "muscle car" or 60's era, I think it would be alright; if that makes sense. I have a 68 Camaro with side pipes, and it is loud, but it looks like it should be loud. Anyway, exhaust is very difficult to choose unless you can actually hear it in advance. I think mine sounds like a truck when I first start it up. Cheers.
I have the mid America design. The sound is loud and nice. But my butt dyno tells me some of my top end went away. They are two and a half inches by the time it reaches the chambers but you must remember those louvers are sticking out into the exhaust flow and can cause some reversion in the exhaust gas flow. I have no scientific dyno proof that hp went away on the top end, but I am looking at the magna flow system from Corvette Central as I think they will flow a little better.
I ran a set MAD's 2 1/2" duals on my 79 for a couple of years until I got tired of the noise. Ended up having a new exhaust made with an X-pipe and Dynomax Turbos...easier on my old tired ears after an hour or two of driving.
I see lots of advertisers claiming that they sound like sidepipes. Does anyone find this to be true? I'm talking about sound 'quality' rather than volume.
