just got my 71 fixed and it breaks again, go figure =( well, i was driving about 60 on the freeway when all of a sudden i decelled as if i took my foot off the gas completely but i hadnt, did it a few times and then it held, id hit the gas but wouldnt accell at all, rolled on for a sec and tried it again, it picked back up but there was a loud POP from my exhaust. got it back home (barely) and now it wont start. it tries to turn over but just wont come up. i replaced the fuel filter and that wasnt the problem, the fuel pump is easily pumping gas to the carb too. all spark plug wires seem secure and undamaged. i dont really know where to go from here with my lack of experience. recently, ive upgraded to a 140amp alternator from a 100 since the 100 wasnt cutting it for my stereo, ive also converted the distributor from a point type to HEI using the conversion kit from mid america

It sounds like you lost your ignition. Check your coil and or ignition wiring.

Be sure your choke is not defective (closing, thus killing the engine.) Pull the breather and watch the choke while someone tries to start the engine. Just a thought.

well, if left for awhile the car will start, but it wont stay that way, it might run for 10 seconds, it might run for 5 minutes, then just die.

check the ignition as stated above. Especially if it backfired. I had one that would run fine, then start cutting out, pick up and run fine again and finally die. It was a fuel line sucking air on the tank. One day it was fine, the next it would want to quit. Spark and or Fuel.

This exact same thing happened to me in my 76 going about 90 in the hammer lane on RT 95 heading to Maryland. Engine popped once & 30 seconds later I lost all power.

After 45 minutes or so on the side of the road, the car started & I finished the last 30 minutes of the trip. It turned out to be the brand new HEI distributor from Summit. Bad pick up coil. Cap, rotor, coil - all were fine!

I'd bet it's the module in the HEI. (Summit HEI=made in China!). Need I say more.

My money is on the fuel system. I think it is running out of fuel: either because the fuel pump is not functioning properly or because the carb is no accepting the amount of fuel that it should. [Are you sure you didn't install the filter incorrectly?]

Ok, he said it was a Mid America HEI not Summit.
Still could be the HEI but get the facts straight.

Sorry Duke, I just realized you weren't talking about the OPs HEI. My mistake.

Backfiring through the exhaust indicates that fuel is still running through the system then igniting in the exhaust when the engine restarts.

I'm betting on an ignition failure. Maybe a short.

Check the wires on the pickup coil going to the module they could be cracked or loose. Could also be the fuel sock in the tank, if it's clogged you won't get enough gas to the pump from the tank, also check the fuel line.

Definitely check the ignition module. They are not expensive but Advance Auto has equipment to check it for free.

It wasn't a Vette, but I had the same type of problem 2 separate times in a car that I own. It was an intermittent coil problem (diagnosed & fixed the first time under warranty by the dealership).
Car ran, then stopped then would start fine 10 or 15 minutes later and ran for maybe 5 minutes or 3 days until it happened again.

Second time I replaced the coil and it's ran fine ever since.

My money is on the coil pack/ HEI unit.

Good Luck!

Same thing. Seemed as soon as the coil warmed up, it would quit. I as well replaced the coil and everything was fine afterwards.
