Default Lower Column Cover

Can anyone tell me the proper way to secure the lower column cover to the column? The only place that I can see to drive the screw into the column is a slot on the plastic sleve on the bottom of the colmn. I would insert a photo but I don't know how.

Take a look at UPC 1, Sheet E2 in your AIM. It shows 2 screws into the dash pad, one on each side of the pad, and 1 screw into the steering column collar.
Regards,
Alan

PS: I put the center one in first because it's the more difficult one to locate and then the other two.

The one that goes into the collar, does it just attach to the slot in the collar, or is there a nut that must be installed? My column has only a open slot about 1/4 inch wide and about 1 1/2 inches long.

Here's my 71'. You should have one of these fasteners in the column, then the other 2 screws go into the lower dash pad.

Much thanks! That is exactly what I needed to see. My column does not have that nut plate. Is it something that I can order on line or something that I will have to fabricate?

I think you'll have to make something. I just looked in a few catalogs and didn't see it. Not even Doc Rebuild had it.

You might give this place a call. They were helpful when I rebuilt my column.

There were two part numbers used for that clip. The first was for a plastic clip 7805495. Later it was a metal clip 406306. neither one is available from GM. Hopefully you might have better luck.

Thanks guys, I have looked at about every web catalog that I could find for that part but no luck. On Monday I'll call a couple of the column rebuild shops and see if they have an old torn up column with that part that they will turn loose of.

Hey, call Gary on Monday. He has a lot of used Corvettes at his shop, and may very well have the small part you need for dollars and shipping.
