Default I've got rust....

Body off of my '74 today. Found cancer at #2. Only around the bushing hole. The frame looks good as does the rest of the birdcage, that is what is exposed. Not sure about the base of the windshield area. Anyway my question is; Can I just plate this area maybe above and below without removing the rocker channel and cutting in a new one?

Thought I would post a picture but I guess I need to be a supporiting member. Going to get my credit card.....

Most vendors sell the "repair channels and inserts" that fit inside th rockers and can be welded in place without removing them. The front and rear inserts will fix the holes if thats all the is bad.

You can just plate the pocket, but I wouldn't do it that way. The best way to fix it is cut out the pocket from the bottom with a sawzall and weld in a new pocket, not all that hard to do. Look that windshield frame over real well, the water that rusted out the #2 pocket came in from somewhere, most common area is the lower frame corners, they rust thru.

I'm concerned about what I don't see. I do need to remove the windshield, will that expose the problem area?

As to the inserts, do they just slip inside of the existing channel or do I need to remove what is there? Not to intimidated by the prospect. I do metal OK. Just don't want to dismantle the birdcage.

Photobucket? Yeh, thats the ticket!

Thanks, Blain.

That's not too bad.
This what I had when I removed my #2 mounts.

I had to cut out the whole rocker.

The inserts are made to go up inside the post and be welded in place so you will need to cut out the area around the hole you have now. Then the inserts will fit up through the rocker and be welded to the bottom of th rocker channels.

I sand blasted my rocker channels and painted them with POR15. They were pretty rusted and had a lot of holes after the sand blasting. I bought rocker channel inserts from Caladonia and installed them under the existing channels. worked out nice.

Hey redwing.
I have followed your repair but just don't think I need to go that far.
What I don't grasp is how these inserts work. I have looked at the vendors pictures but still don't get it. Do the channels need to be cut out?

Question for Sixfooter; Do you have contact info for Caladonia?

The rocker do not have to be cutout like I did. If the rust is only in the mount area then just cut the center out so the inserts will fit up into the post. Just buy the inserts.

Still trying to visualize.
Would I cut a rectangle around the mount hole the right size to slide this insert up into the post?
The repair piece in your image on previous post looks like it extends into the #1 mount.

If you want to repair this locally or replace the sill as a whole you will have to do some serious cutting to your fiberglass.

Personally I would try a different approach

That is correct. The purpose of the inserts is to give you something to weld the post to if the bottom of the post are rusted out. If they are not and all you want to do is have something to fix the mount holes then just buy the channel and clear the holes so that the new body mounts only contact the new steel. Weld them into the old rockers and you will be good to go.
