any cases where a non-pro street type solid rear axle was installed in a daily driver?? any pics would be appreciated ...also is this something the average corvette owner could accomplish in their home garage. I don't have "mad skills" and don't want to get in over my head!
some of the better handling cars i have owned over the years have been live axle (firebird, camaro etc) and i wanted some feedback as to how the live axle would perform on the c3.
I have seen a few on here but none were daily or weekend drivers. They were all converted for performance driving reasons. It takes a bit of custom fabricating but it's do-able.
If you mean both left & right sides are locked together (via spool/minispool etc) to turn same ... suggest you don't drive it on street. Anytime you turn the car while there's least bit oil or water back end will be slipping around (as in YOU won't be driving back end, the axle will).
If you mean a NON-independant suspension ... that's fine.
I think that you would be better to get a susp. kit,and make the car handle the way that you want.I had a 74 coupe,383,2.08 steel heads,6.71,2-650s,and juice...I put a 9 inch in it,but it was a drag car,so I can't really say on the handling.I've also, owned, and set up many early fastback Mustangs in the past, and they handled. But vettes handle okay. They don't ride the best, but they usually go where you point them, and there is kits to do anything that you want to do to one to make it handle.
I don't know if I have any pics of the old 74.I will look, but I changed computers since back then.Good luck....

I've got a solid rear axle in my 61 Of course it came with it. My opinion is that you would be going backwards technology wise. The independent rear suspension is far superior for ride and handling. I can see going solid axle in a drag car but not a road car. You won't like the way it rides and handles.
The point of putting a solid axle in isn't to improve the handling (it makes it worse. No modern sports car has a solid axle, and no, the Mustang is not a sports car). It's to handle the horsepower of a big horsepower engine. "Big", meaning 700+ horsepower. Daily drivers typically have more modest power, so stick with the halfshafts.
